Our History

Our Beginnings
In the fall of 1864, a group of Riverdalians came together and resolved “to build a fit and proper Temple for the worship of Almighty God, appropriate to the surrounding circumstances, and to the wealth of the neighborhood, and that it should be called ‘Christ Church, Riverdale.’” Read More.

Notable Parishioners
Since 1866, Christ Church Riverdale has had twelve rectors, as well as assisting clergy from time to time. Prominent New Yorkers associated with the parish include Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia (in whose memory two stained-glass windows were given), Yankees great, Lou Gehrig (whose funeral was here and in whose memory the side altar rail was given by Babe Ruth), and painter/printmaker Isabel Bishop Wolf.  See Gallery below.

Our Community
Our relationships with surrounding congregations have been strong.  We have shared worship with Riverdale Presbyterian Church, especially in July and August. We hosted Riverdale Temple while its building was being constructed in the early 1950s. Read More
